The great thing about layering is its practicality: Depending on the season, the colder it is, the more layers you can generally wear.
Each one has a function and isn't just there for show, you can easily wear a hoodie (like I have here) under a jacket and over a shirt and tie and still pull off a stylish look.
When it's cold like it has been (the cold weather just won't quit), I'd go so far as to wear gloves and a scarf and possibly a hat as well (I seem to be singing "Macho, macho man" in my head now). Of course you know what happens as soon as you step inside, yep all the layers come off and are probably thrown around the floor because it's too hot!
(There's just no pleasing some people is there?!?!)
I'd probably say when it comes to layering, each of your visible pieces should be items that you could easily wear on their own... in other words, you'd be comfortable wearing any of your layering pieces independently of each other.
The jacket I'm wearing here is a heavy Harris tweed that lends itself to layering really well, a nice pair of dark blue denim regular fit jeans and brogues (mine work really well with the grey in the outfit) still give it a really stylish look.

The perfect way to layer menswear
One thing I wanted to do here was to achieve a grade of colour and pattern through the layers. Starting with the Harris tweed in beige, through the greys to the patterned tie and solid colour shirt, this steady grading gives the outfit a balanced appeal.I like it a lot!!

I like this idea---even for me to try. And I'll have to have my husband see if it'll work under one of his jackets!! I'm always a sucker for layering, so thanks for the idea!

My pleasure Jodie!
ReplyDeleteI love a bit of layering too so I need to make the most of it whilst the weather is still a bit chilly..

Just showed this to my husband. He's built like you and looks a bit like you too. He was a poor, single father of two when I met him and wore whatever he could grab at Value Village. Only now is he learning that he can look good and that he deserves it!
ReplyDeleteHi Charlotte,
Deleteyour fella does deserve it!! I wear a uniform all day and as I've got older I find that I want to look (and feel) great in what I'm wearing. It doesn't have to be expensive, just a bit more thoughtful about what I'm putting on. It's nice to want to make an effort as a guy.. I think our other halves appreciate it.
Enjoy the rest of you week!
