Versatile British Tailoring for Workwear and Weekend Wear

British workwear tailoring by Arthur Shirtley: Smart casual menswear outfit \ tweed blazer \ check shirt \ dark wash straight leg jeans \ brown high top brogues | Silver Londoner, over 40 menswear
The idea of workwear is (to some) not worth investing in due to obvious reasons: Why spend a great deal of money on something you only wear at work? Is this investment really necessary?

The Gingham Shirt: A Menswear Wardrobe Essential

Smart Casual Menswear: Gingham Check Shirt \ Cardigan \ Grey Chinos \ Desert Boots \ Silver Londoner, over 40 style
It's been a long road coming out of the winter months but I think we can finally wave goodbye to the cold dark days and look forward to warmer, longer, sunnier days allowing us chaps to wear outfits that express the feeling of having a spring in our step.

Styling Casual Brown Chinos, Over 40 Menswear

Casual Menswear: V-neck Jumper \ T-shirt \ Chinos \ Grey Jacket \ Canvas Boots \ Silver Londoner, over 40 style
After the craziness of the weekend that was the UK Blog Awards (at which the wife Not Dressed As Lamb won in the Fashion & Beauty category!), I was happy to swap my smart suit for some casual brown chinos. Huge congratulations to Catherine - third time lucky as they say!

Layering With a Hoodie to Achieve a Smart Casual Look

A layered smart casual outfit: Striped tie \ dress shirt \ grey cardigan \ grey hoodie \ Harris tweed jacket \ jeans \ grey brogues | Silver Londoner, over 40 menswear

The great thing about layering is its practicality: Depending on the season, the colder it is, the more layers you can generally wear.

A Smart Stylish Alternative to a Suit and Tie, Over 40 Menswear

Smart menswear: Blue blazer \ striped sweater \ grey dress trousers \ brown brogues | Silver Londoner, over 40 style
As you can probably see from the photos it was extremely windy and I had a bad hair day! Always one to persevere, it was definitely time to wear a striped jumper with this nice blue jacket, a pair of grey trousers and brown brogues [similar] to finish off the outfit.

How to Style a Vintage Harris Tweed Jacket for the Transitional Season

Smart casual menswear; roll-neck \ grey tweed blazer \ skinny jeans \ tan brogues - Silver Londoner, over 40 menswear
A Harris Tweed jacket and roll neck can really look good when winter is coming to an end but it's still too cold to get your summer clothes out.

Can Men in Their 40s Wear a Baseball Cap Without Looking Scruffy?

How to wear not-too-skinny skinny jeans: Grey wool jacket \ baseball cap \ striped scarf \ desert boots | Silver Londoner, over 40 menswear

This is definitely a dress-down look for me, more "let's go shopping" or "go to the cinema" than planning for a nice meal out in the evening. The jeans and sweatshirt are mainstay items that require no fanfare, the desert boots, jacket and scarf add style.

Styling a Harrington Jacket Steve McQueen Style

Casual weekend wear for over 40 men: Harrington jacket \ white t-shirt \ grey chinos \ white Converse | Silver Lononder, over 40 menswear blog
This outfit is certainly a simple ensemble - a white t-shirt topped with a Harrington jacket, grey chinos and classic Converse All Stars, and it didn't require much in the way of getting-ready time which is a good thing.

A Stylish Way For Over 40 Men to Wear a Cardigan

Smart casual menswear: Cable knit cardigan \ shirt and striped tie \ camel chinos \ canvas lace-up shoes \ RayBan Clubmasters | Silver Londoner, over 40 menswear
I've always been a fan of mixing formal wear with a casual look. A shirt and tie can be worn with a pair of chinos and desert boots to give a more relaxed look to an outfit, and with this you could wear a patterned or cable knit cardigan (like mine).

How to Style a Classic Men's Navy Raincoat | Over 40 Smart Casual Menswear

I love the style of a classic raincoat paired with jeans and brogues and a smart gingham shirt. The crew neck sweater is a perfect addition to the look, and complements the coat for an overall smart appearance.

The look I have here draws on the traditional British style icons that I love to emulate. The gingham shirt provides the necessary pattern against the solid feel of the outfit and the brogues add an organic touch. My wife actually said that if she could dress a man, this is how she would want him to dress. >>

Mens Sportswear: Fred Perry Top, Converse and Beanie

Casual Menswear: Fred Perry, Converse and Beanie
For a sportswear look, this Fred Perry tracksuit top, Converse, beanie and gloves is just about perfect when you're out for a bracing stroll and you're looking for a snug yet liberating outfit to wear.

If you've just got to keep it spontaneous but still want to put a twist on what you're wearing (especially in the colder months) I like to embrace some classic items. A Fred Perry is synonymous with British style and sub culture, Converse All-Stars are iconic and look great with anything from suits to beach shorts and the beanie is bloomin' comfy! >>

Levi's Sherpa Collar Denim Jacket, Aviators, Beanie | Over 40 Casual Menswear

What could be better than a Levi's sherpa collar denim jacket, aviators and a beanie to confront the chilly winter days that are all too common at the moment? Not a lot really, this is an exceptionally comfortable ensemble and the jacket is top notch. The lining is really thick which is a quality "plus" with the denim, (it IS Levi's after all... whaddya expect, huh). >>

Casual Menswear: Brown Sweater, Jeans and Scarf

Casual menswear: Brown sweater, jeans and scarf
I really like this casual menswear look. A brown sweater, jeans and scarf are a really great combination; the brown in the top is the perfect colour for this time of year.
A dark denim is just about the mainstay for me at the moment as are the boots (which I seem to be wearing with everything).

There's not much more to say about this ensemble really, it works because it's simple and smart, it's just a matter of finding the right colour combination that suits you. Come the summer, you could revisit a similar look but rather than go for a heavy fabric and colour scheme, try a lighter linen with bright colours. >>

Menswear: Dark Striped Shirt | Jeans and Tan Belt

Menswear: Dark striped shirt, jeans and tan belt
I love the look of a dark striped shirt, jeans and a tan belt (with a pair of tan brogues thrown in for good measure, of course).

The statement of two strong colours opposing each other gives this outfit a very solid appearance and the rich dark denim is always a winner. Brogues are brogues and need to be worn at every possible moment so they'll always work in my book. The shirt is understated and the stripe within it does enough to give the overall look a subtle smart slant... (try saying THAT when you've had a few)!! >>

How to Style a Buffalo Plaid Shirt | Over 40 Smart Casual Menswear

Question, is there anything more comfortable than styling a buffalo plaid shirt, roll-neck and 7 For All Mankind jeans on a cold January morning? NO... I hear you cry, and you'd be right!

Weirdly, I only found out yesterday that what we call a lumberjack shirt in Blighty, is called a "buffalo plaid shirt" in the US of A... I kinda like that difference. >>

How to Style a Roll-Neck Sweater | With a Camel Blazer and Jeans

Menswear: Camel blazer, black roll neck and jeans
What I love about styling a roll-neck sweater with a blazer and jeans is the immediate "cool" factor that comes with something your parents wore to a beatnik club all those years ago or Richard Roundtree did with such swagger in Shaft. Roll-necks are the stuff of legend, often mocked as old fashioned... what's wrong with a bit of old fashioned anyway, it's obviously stood the test of time (like denim) and should be adorned whenever an opportunity arises. >>

How to Style a Smart Striped Shirt | With a Polka Dot Tie, Jacket and Jeans

I've been asked to review this Slim Fit shirt by TM Lewin and can honestly say that the quality of the pattern definition and softness of the fabric are of the highest standard. There is a lovely shape to the shirt that is accentuated by the classic collar and the double cuffs (French cuffs) that allow you to display cufflinks to add that extra special touch. I have to say that if I had one shirt in my wardrobe, it would have to be this one, it's absolutely exquisite! >>

Menswear: Peacoat, Denim Jacket and Brogues

I'm sure most men love the look of a peacoat, denim jacket and brogues. There's something so cool about it that we all aspire to the likes of Steve McQueen, Marlon Brando or Jimmy Dean as we turn up that collar and head off in to the chill winter's air... or is it just me! This is the time of year for some serious layering too, so gents take a good look at what's tucked in that wardrobe and see what you can create. >>

Menswear: Button Up Shirt, Chinos, Derbies and Ray-Bans

The great thing about a button up shirt, chinos, derbies and Ray-Bans here is the unstructured look to this outfit. I started out with a slim-fit tie as well, but it wasn't how I was feeling about the look I wanted.. so I ditched the tie and there you have it. It's more relaxed and not particularly taxing to put together. The blue of the shirt helps steer this away from a more formal look and all I can say about the Ray-Ban Clubmasters is a true classic accessory. >>
